Mafia Island

Mafia Island, located just a brief flight south of Zanzibar, is the sole island along the Tanzanian coast that actively invites travelers to discover its surrounding islands and sandbars.

Overview

Mafia Island has a lot to offer as a less-visited, untouched alternative to other Indian Ocean sites near Zanzibar and along the coast. It has fewer beaches than Zanzibar but excellent diving, similar to Pemba. With only a short flight south of Zanzibar, is the only island off the coast of Tanzania that actively encourages visitors to explore its outlying islands and sand bars.

The small number of hotels only adds to tourists’ interest in this gem, as a vacation destination. Most people associate the ocean with the Marine Park, which was established to protect the reefs. This location, in comparison to Zanzibar, provides the best diving, fishing, as well as snorkeling in the entire region. Moreover, the island has several protected bays and coves that are ideal for beginning to intermediate divers. Furthermore, there are plenty of opportunities to test and reward the advanced diver.

These magnificent creatures, with their distinct spots and striped markings, appear to prefer the areas surrounding the island. Moreover, are said to be present almost all year. When you snorkel or dive near them, you will be amazed to see them feeding.

Their preferred food is plankton, and these gentle giants are completely harmless to humans. The island offers unique snorkeling and scuba diving experiences because it is located in a prime area between the Indian Ocean on the east and the Rufiji Delta on the west. 

As a result, the island provides an ideal environment for long, continuous lines of coral reefs. The area’s tepid waters and the protection of the bay have transformed it into an unbelievable beautiful paradise buried beneath the vast ocean’s seas. If you take a snorkeling or scuba diving tour at the marine park, you will enter a peaceful world where over 400 different species of fish and other marine life are protected by an incredible variety of coral.

The mild sunrays filtered through the clear waters reveal this marine life. Look for Malabar groupers, sweetlips, little emperors or changu, potato groupers, triggerfish, angelfish, bluefin trevally, barracudas, reef sharks, yellow Kashmiri snappers, dolphins, and also massive eagle rays.

A trip to Chole Island

Chole is a small island nearby. Time appears to have stopped entirely on this island without cars.

As you meander through the maze of walkways carved through the palms, you can see the locals’ mud cottages and the various crafts and trades they practice. The Flying Fox, particularly famous for being the world’s largest bat, has a large protected area.

Kilindoni, the capital of this Earthly paradise, is especially charming little town. It houses the single runway of the airport as well as the jetty from which fishermen and boats arrive and depart.

In the evening, women set up tables and chairs in the streets for customers to try local cuisine at incredibly low prices.

It is only a short boat ride away from Marimbani, a pristine sandbank that only appears for a few hours each day. Crabs abound, as do white dunes and clear waterways. 

It was worthwhile to arrive early or stay late to have the entire house to yourself. This is undeniably one of Mafia Island’s most popular activities.

Visit the Mafia Island Lighthouse

On the island’s northernmost point, an intact lighthouse can be seen. The vast majority of visitors do not visit this part of the island. 

To get there, you can take a cab, tuk-tuk, or motorcycle. There is an undeveloped beach north of the island where you can swim.

Kizimkazi Beach

This coastline is very different from the traditional palm-backed wetlands of the east coast. Because the beaches here are small rather than long stretches of sand, and a coral rag bluff raises the shoreline above the water, there aren’t as many places to stay, and the vibe is distinct and genuine.

The dolphin safaris in Kizimkazi are well-known, but if you visit, please be cautious when signing up for boat trips that include the opportunity to swim with dolphins.

Seaweed growers appreciate this location in Zanzibar’s southern east. They may be encountered while walking along a beach, especially at low tide.

Bagamoyo

Bagamoyo, home to numerous UNESCO World Heritage Landmarks and world-class historical sites, is waiting to be discovered.

Overview

Bagamoyo is home to many ethnic groups, including the Wakwere, Wazigua, and Wazaramo. Bagamoyo’s many cultures, including those of Arab descent, coexist, making the town a welcoming destination for tourists from all over the world. Bagamoyo, which is home to numerous UNESCO World Heritage Landmarks and world-class historical sites, has a rich cultural history waiting to be discovered. Bagamoyo, an ancient city, was the final stop for slave and ivory caravans traveling on foot from Lake Tanganyika to Zanzibar. It used to be one of the busiest trading ports on East Africa’s coast. Bagamoyo, whose name translates from Swahili as “buried my heart,” became the focal point of missionaries working to end the slave trade.

The Most Important Trading Port

In the peaceful community of Bagamoyo, there are a few remaining German colonial structures. Bagamoyo was once one of the most important trading ports on the entire East African coast. Its harbor served as the final stop for caravans transporting slaves and ivory who had walked from Lake Tanganyika. Slaves and ivory were transported by dhow from Bagamoyo to Zanzibar, where they were distributed throughout the world. Bagamoyo is now a hub for dhow construction in the region and along Tanzania’s coast.

Bagamoyo was the capital of German East Africa and a center for the construction of dhow boats. Previously known as a major stop for slave and ivory traffickers, the town saw numerous uprisings against colonial settlers in the late nineteenth century and kept records of them. Bagamoyo is now well known as a peaceful village with beautiful beaches, such as the Lazy Lagoon, which is ideal for relaxing.

By boat, you can enjoy excellent bird watching in the Ruvu River Delta, where you may also encounter hippos and crocodiles. The National historic site known as Kaole is located in Tanzania’s Bagamoyo District of the Pwani Region. The mysterious ruins can be found southeast of Bagamoyo. The ruins of one of the oldest mosques on Tanzania’s main island, and one of the oldest in East Africa, are at their heart. 

It was built long before Bagamoyo was important when the Sultan of Kilwa controlled coastal trade. Among the graves are several Shirazi pillar-style tombs, similar to those at Tongoni but in slightly better condition, as well as a small museum housing Chinese ceramics and other relics. The old, silted harbor used during Kaole’s golden age is just to the east of the ruins, past a dense patch of mangroves.

Bagamoyo - A trip to Ngome Kongwe

Many people regard this old fort as a massive and beautiful structure, but many Bagamoyo residents refer to it as the “golden house.” 

The first stone structure in this ancient city is the old castle, which was built in the 1860s as part of the residence of a wealthy Arab. Following the capture of the small Catholic Church by the Omani Army, the old fort near Zanzibar’s port was built. 

According to legend, the rulers of Pemba and Zanzibar requested the assistance of this Omani army in overthrowing the oppressive and cruel Portuguese.

The museum’s location is more interesting than the museum itself, as it was once the starting point for slave and trade caravans to the interior.

One of Bagamoyo’s highlights is the Catholic mission and museum, which is located a few kilometers northwest of town and is accessible via a long avenue shaded by mango trees. 

It contains educational exhibits from Bagamoyo’s glory days. The chapel where Livingstone’s ashes were interred before being transported to Zanzibar. The first mission in Tanzania was founded with the establishment of Freedom Village.

Crabs dart across the sand as you watch the moon rise over the Indian Ocean from the beach, which also serves as a base for fishing dhows. Many of the town’s fishermen moor their boats at the Dhow Harbor, which is located on the shoreline closest to Bagamoyo’s old town conservation area.
