Udzungwa National Park rises magnificently from eastern Tanzania’s flat coastal scrub. It is made up of a chain of twelve enormous mountains.

Udzungwa National Park Overview

The tallest and most biologically diverse mountain range is Udzungwa, which rises magnificently from eastern Tanzania’s flat coastal scrub. It is made up of a chain of twelve enormous mountains covered in forest. These isolated massifs, collectively known as the Eastern Arc Mountains, have also been referred to as the African Galapagos because of their abundance of rare plants and animals, most notably the delicate African violet.

The dark, ancient forests of Udzungwa are genuinely enchanting; they are a lush haven of sun-dappled glades surrounded by trees that are 30 meters (100 feet) tall, with mushrooms, lichens, mosses, and ferns covering their buttresses.

Among the historic ranges of the Eastern Arc, Udzungwa is the only one to have received national park status. It is particularly exceptional among Tanzanian forests in that its closed-canopy forest extends uninterruptedly from an altitude of 250 meters (820 feet) to more than 2,000 meters (6,560 feet).

Udzungwa attracts hikers despite not being a typical place to see game. The well-known half-day hike to Sanje Waterfall, which plunges 170 meters (550 feet) in a misty spray into the forested valley below, is part of an excellent network of forest paths.

Before climbing to Mwanihana peak, the second-highest point in the range, on the more difficult two-night Mwanihana Trail, you can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding sugar plantations from the high plateau.

More than 400 species of birds, including the beautiful and easily spotted green-headed oriole and more than a dozen elusive Eastern Arc endemics, are found in Udzungwa, attracting ornithologists.

The forest partridge, which was discovered for the first time in 1991 and is more closely linked to an Asian genus than any other African bird, is one of the four unique bird species to Udzungwa. Of the six reported primate species, only the Sanje Crested Mangabey and the Iringa Red Colobus are found elsewhere in the world. The latter, astonishingly, was unknown to scientists until 1979.

Undoubtedly, this vast forest still holds many hidden gems; continuous scientific research will undoubtedly expand the list of various endemics it is home to.

Saanane Island Overview

Saanane Island, which has three islets and an aquatic environment, has been a fully functional national park since July 2013 and covers an area of 2.18 sq km. The islets are located on the main Island’s southern coast.

The park set records for being the smallest national park in Tanzania and East Africa as well as the first national park to ever be situated inside a city. Mammals including Impala, Rock Hyrax, Velvet Monkeys, and Wild Cats reside in the Park. The fact that there are “De-brazas Monkeys” indicates that this park has the potential to be the only one in the nation to contain the species.

Crocodiles, Monitor and Agama lizards, Pancake and Leopard Tortoises, and Snakes, particularly Python, are among the other prevalent reptiles. Numerous fish species, primarily tilapia and nile perch, live in the park’s aquatic areas.

Getting There   

From either the Dar es Salaam or Kilimanjaro International Air Ports, one can travel by road or by air to Mwanza. From places like Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Kigoma, and Tabora, to name a few, one can also travel by road or train to Mwanza City. Additionally, passengers can take a ship or vessel from Uganda, Kenya, Bukoba, and neighboring Islands to Mwanza Port.

From the mainland’s Park Offices, a short boat ride to the island takes around 5 minutes. From the City Center, it takes about 15 minutes to walk to the Park Offices.

Saanane Island History

The Island of Saa Nane has the name of Mzee Saanane Chawandi, a former fisherman who later became a farmer and relocated to another island (for which he was paid) in order to facilitate conservation efforts in the early 1960s. As the first government-owned zoo, Tanzania assumed ownership of the island in 1964. 

Its original territory, which included both dry land and water, was around 0.7 square kilometers. Saa Nane National Park, however, annexing and including two other smaller islets known as considering that Chankende Kubwa and Chandkende Ndogo are also situated in the southern region of the main island, the protected area now measures 1.32 square kilometers. The primary goals were to promote serious wildlife conservation education and to encourage enjoyment among the Mwanza population.

Saanane Island is a great location for bird watching, rock climbing, picnics, bush lunches, photography/videography, sport fishing, and game viewing. Birthdays, family days, team building exercises, weddings, and other special occasions can all be planned.

Ruaha National Park: Overview

One of Tanzania’s few well-known wilderness areas, Ruaha National Park offers a unique opportunity for animal viewing that is complemented by an amazing environment. Nyerere National Park, formerly the Selous Game Reserve, is an expansive protected area in southeastern Tanzania, recognized as the largest national park in Africa. This park boasts a variety of habitats shaped by the Rufiji River, encompassing woodlands, as well as wetlands. Overview

Mikumi is among the largest National parks in Tanzania. Additionally, Dar es Salaam has the easiest access to it.
