Mahale Mountains National Park

The Mahale Mountains National Park is home to the largest known population of eastern chimpanzees, and thanks to its vastness and isolation, these chimpanzees thrive. Additionally, it is a unique location where both chimpanzees and lions live together peacefully.

Overview

The park, like its northern neighbor Gombe, is home to some of Africa’s last remaining wild chimpanzees, with a population of more than 800. A Japanese research study started in the 1960s has helped these chimpanzees become accustomed to human visitors.

Mahale is a town in Western Tanzania, south of the town of Kigoma. Moreover, it borders Lake Tanganyika, the longest, second-deepest, and least polluted freshwater lake in the world. Additionally, the lake is home to an estimated 1,000 different fish species.

Best time to visit The Mahale Mountains National Park

The ideal time is during the dry season (May to October). Chimpanzees are frequently spotted in large groups around this time, the sun shines on the lake’s fish, and the beach is a relaxing place to be. The park itself, on the other hand, is open all year long.

A trip during the rainy season might also be an unforgettable one because to the magnificent lightning storms that light up the lake at night and the views of the neighboring DR Congo across the water.

Parks accessibility

The park is reachable by road, air, and also sea. Most travelers and chimp lovers can find a flight, automobile, or boat that suits them.

Direct flights to Mahale

This is, undeniably, the most direct route to the park. The three tour companies with camps in the area plan frequent flights between the park and Arusha town during the busiest travel season (June to October). Twice weekly flights come and depart from October through March. There are no planned flights between March, April, and the first half of May due to camp closures.
However, travelers also have the option of booking their own charter flights. Tanzania is home to numerous charter flight providers, including, but not limited to, Air Excel, Northern Air, and Regional Air. Moreover, private charters can be scheduled from Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Dar es Salaam, Mwanza, or Zanzibar, which are all important cities.
Only light aircraft with a maximum carrying capacity of 12 passengers should use Mahale’s airstrip.

It provides pristine animal watching in the third-largest national park in the nation, in a secluded area off the usual path. The national park showcases Africa at its most untamed, with wild bush landscapes, breathtaking views, and an abundance of species. One of Tanzania’s most unspoiled regions is the wildness of Katavi National Park, which is situated in the country’s western region.

Taste of Africa as it may have been a century ago

The majestic landscape of Katavi is as diverse as it is unspoiled. Huge populations of hippos and a variety of birds live in flood plains with numerous canals and thick reed growth. Elephant and buffalo herds are hidden by forest canopies in the woodlands to the west. After a rain, seasonal lakes fill with murky colored water, and animals from all across the park come to drink there. The park, which is a must-see for tourists planning to explore the continent’s wilderness, is also home to the endangered roan and sable antelope species.

Katavi, which is remote, unexplored, and little visited, is a true wilderness that offers those brave souls who do make it there an exhilarating taste of Africa as it may have been a century ago. It is the third-largest national park in Tanzania and is located in a remote region in the southwest of the nation, inside an arm of the Rift Valley that is cut off by the shallow, ominous Lake Rukwa.

Katuma River

The majority of Katavi is covered in a hypnotically featureless tangle of brachystegia woods, which is home to sizable but elusive populations of eland, sable, and roan antelopes that are specific to the area. However, the Katuma River and its accompanying floodplains, including the seasonally present Lakes Katavi and Chada, are the primary areas for wildlife watching in the park. These beautiful, marshy lakes offer a home for countless water birds during the rainy season and also host the highest densities of hippos and crocodiles in Tanzania.

Katavi actually comes to life during the dry season, when the floodwaters recede. For kilometers around, the Katuma has been reduced to a shallow, muddy trickle, and the surrounding floodplains support wildlife populations that defy belief. 

The most unique wildlife of Katavi National Park

Numerous herds of 1,000 or more buffalo and an estimated 4,000 elephants may congregate nearby, while a profusion of giraffes, zebras, impalas, and reedbucks make easy prey for the many lion prides and spotted hyena clans whose territories congregate on the floodplains. The most unique wildlife display in Katavi is supplied by its hippos. At the end of the dry season, 200 people could sprawl out together in any riverine pool with enough depth. And when more hippos congregate in one area, male rivalry intensifies. Bloody territorial clashes occur frequently, with the defeated male left to sulk helplessly on the wide plains until it gains enough confidence to undertake an assault.

Safaris include driving, walking, and camping. Visit the tamarind tree beside Lake Katavi where the ghost of the fabled hunter Katabi, for whom the park is called, resides – Offerings are still left here by residents seeking the spirit’s blessing.

Gombe National Park is a wild region filled with stunning trees and clear views of the lake, situated along the pristine shores of Lake Tanganyika.

Once the day’s exploration of the chimpanzees concludes, visitors typically enjoy their time in Gombe by hiking and swimming.

Overview

Jane Goodall, a local primatologist who spent many years in its forests researching the behavior of the endangered chimpanzees, is the most well-known inhabitant of Gombe Stream National Park, which is situated on the western edge of Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Gombe Stream is an untamed area with beautiful trees and unobstructed lake vistas that is located on the wild beaches of Lake Tanganyika. After the day’s visit to the chimpanzees is finished, people sometimes spend time here hiking and swimming.

The Chimpanzees

The chimpanzee families that reside safely within the confines of Gombe Stream Park are without a doubt the site’s biggest draw. The highlight of many visitors’ journeys to Africa is to go on one of the guided excursions that takes them deep into the forest where they may spend the entire morning observing and sitting with the magnificent primates. The tropical woodlands of Gombe Stream are home to numerous other primate species in addition to chimpanzees. The deep forest is home to baboons, vervet and colobus monkeys, forest pigs, small antelopes, as well as a variety of tropical birds.

Deep in the jungle, a whoop of excitement breaks out. It is quickly joined by a dozen additional voices and grows in volume, tempo, and tone to a frenzied screeching crescendo. Gombe National Park – More Information

The smallest of Tanzania’s national parks, Gombe is a precarious chimpanzee habitat strip that spans the rocky northern shore of Lake Tanganyika and the deep river valleys that surround it. 

The chimpanzees there are undeniaby accustomed to human visits thanks to the groundbreaking work of Jane Goodall, who established the world’s longest-running behavioral research program in 1960. Moreover, the matriarch of the original community, Fifi, who is the only surviving member and was only three years old when Goodall first set foot in Gombe, is still frequently viewed by tourists.

Since chimpanzees and humans share 98% of the same genes, it is not necessary to be a scientist to distinguish between the distinctive repertoires of pants, hoots, and screams that characterize the celebrities, the power brokers, and the supporting cast. 

Up Close Encounter

When you gaze into a chimpanzee’s eyes and they glance back at you, perhaps you will notice a spark of comprehension – a look of apparent recognition across the thinnest of species borders.

The other mammals that live in Gombe are mostly primates. While red-tailed and red colobus monkeys—the latter of which are frequently hunted by chimpanzees—stick to the forest canopy, a population of beachcomber olive baboons, which has been studied since the 1960s, is particularly accustomed.
Around 200 different bird species can be found in the park, from the famous fish eagle to the jewel-like Peter’s twin spots that tamely hop around the visitor center.

As night falls after dark, a brilliant night sky is enhanced by the lamps of hundreds of little wooden boats that are bobbing on the lake in the style of a vast city.
