3 Days

Mount Meru Climbing

Tour Overview

Mount Meru is one of Arusha National Park’s main attractions. The entire ascent takes at least three days. The route leads climbers through a series of natural environments rich in flora and fauna, as well as an intriguing mix of nature and culture.

Meru has one route to the summit that can be attempted in three days, but we strongly recommend four days for acclimatization. Most alpinists use Meru to acclimate before climbing Kilimanjaro. The mountain has less snow as a result of the volcano eruption.

Unlike Mount Kilimanjaro, climbing Mount Meru requires you to be escorted by an armed ranger(s) as you pass through the Arusha National Park. It is during this time that you will enjoy the walking safari as you pass groups of African buffaloes, zebras, and black and white colobus monkeys, to name a few wildlife species.

Full Itinerary

After breakfast in the hotel, you will be picked up and driven to the Momella Gate in Arusha National Park. While you and your guide are completing check-in procedures, the porters will organize and pack your belongings for the hike. The ascent will then begin in Arusha National Park.

The first day of hiking is similar to a walking safari; expect to see giraffes, zebras, antelope, buffalo, and possibly elephants close to the trail. Due to the high likelihood of encountering wildlife, an armed ranger hired through the National Park is required to accompany you on the hike for the duration.

You will pass the Ngarenanyuki River and a beautiful waterfall at the base of Mt. Meru as you continue hiking. When you arrive at Miriakamba Hut (2500m), your chef will prepare a hot dinner for you as well as washing water. Take in the stunning sunset and stay the night.

After breakfast, you will begin ascending the steep trail along the saddle’s ridge. You might see some wildlife along the way! Views of Mount Meru Crater and the Ash Tray can be had from the trail.

When you arrive at camp, you can acclimate further by hiking Little Mt. Meru (3820 m) with your guide. You will be served an early dinner so that you can rest thoroughly before your midnight summit attempt.

Your guide will wake you up around midnight for tea and biscuits before starting your summit attempt. From Rhino Point to Cobra Point, the trail begins with a steep ascent. In the final hour of the hike, you’ll scramble along a rocky ridge between Meru’s crater and inner cliffs. At sunrise, you will reach Meru’s summit (4565m), with spectacular views of Mt. Meru Ash Tray and Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Enjoy the scenery before descending to Saddle Hut for a short break. We stop for a quick break and brunch at Saddle Hut before continuing down to the Momella gate. Your transfer vehicle will be waiting for you at Momella gate, ready to pick you up and drop you off at your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
