Overview
Mafia Island has a lot to offer as a less-visited, untouched alternative to other Indian Ocean sites near Zanzibar and along the coast. Mafia has fewer beaches than Zanzibar but excellent diving, similar to Pemba. Mafia, which is only a short flight south of Zanzibar, is the only island off the coast of Tanzania that actively encourages visitors to explore its outlying islands and sand bars.
The small number of hotels only adds to tourists’ interest in Mafia as a vacation destination. Most people associate the ocean with the Marine Park, which was established in Mafia to protect its reefs. This location, in comparison to Zanzibar, provides the best diving, fishing, and snorkeling in the entire region. The Mafia has several protected bays and coves that are ideal for beginning to intermediate divers, as well as plenty of opportunities to test and reward the advanced diver.
Mafia Island was an important trading port in the eighth century. Mafia Island is a group of islands in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Tanzania. The island served as a stopover for traders traveling to Madagascar and Mozambique, and the locals referred to it as “a healthy habitation.”
As time passed, the Mafia was forgotten in the modernization process. Furthermore, when you visit the island today while on your beach vacation in Africa, you will notice that life on the island is much as it must have been many years ago, but without the commotion of a trading port.
It will be difficult for anyone not to fall in love with Tanzania’s Mafia Island. The island lifestyle and Tanzanian culture complement each other well. Mafia Island attracts enough visitors to support a small number of attractions and lodgings without becoming overcrowded or negatively impacted by tourism.
Remote Island Vacation
The southernmost of the islands give the impression of being cut off from the rest of humanity.
When you arrive on your Tanzania island-hopping tour, you will be surrounded by a timeless, peaceful atmosphere where the most important decisions of the day may be deciding what to eat for lunch and dinner, taking a long walk on the powdery soft sand beaches, and enjoying the warm sun and gentle ocean breezes, all without crowds of tourists and massive resorts.
Because they value their simple existence of farming, fishing, and making mats and baskets, the residents try to keep the outside capitalist world at bay. Fruit trees, baobab trees, palm trees, mangroves, and other tropical plants thrive in Mafia’s lush tropical forest.
Swim With Whale Sharks
Swimming with whale sharks is a once-in-a-lifetime experience at Mafia Island for your marine vacation. They can reach lengths of more than ten meters, making them the largest fish in the ocean. The best time to visit is between October and March when they can be seen feeding on the higher surface.
These magnificent creatures, with their distinct spots and striped markings, appear to prefer the areas surrounding the island and are said to be present almost all year. When you snorkel or dive near them, you will be amazed to see them feeding.
Their preferred food is plankton, and these gentle giants are completely harmless to humans. During your visit to Mafia Island, you’ll notice that extra precautions are being taken to ensure that these animals and their feeding areas are not negatively impacted by an increase in human activity. Furthermore, precautions are taken to keep them from being bothered, scared, touched, or chased.
Snorkeling & Scuba Diving
Mafia Island offers unique snorkeling and scuba diving experiences because it is located in a prime area between the Indian Ocean on the east and the Rufiji Delta on the west.
As a result, the island provides an ideal environment for long, continuous lines of coral reefs. The area’s tepid waters and the protection of the bay have transformed it into an unbelievable beautiful paradise buried beneath the vast ocean’s seas. If you take a snorkeling or scuba diving tour at the marine park, you will enter a peaceful world where over 400 different species of fish and other marine life are protected by an incredible variety of coral.
The mild sunrays filtered through the clear waters reveal this marine life. Look for Malabar groupers, sweetlips, little emperors or changu, potato groupers, triggerfish, angelfish, bluefin trevally, barracudas, reef sharks, yellow Kashmiri snappers, dolphins, and massive eagle rays.
A trip to Chole Island
Chole is a small island close to Mafia Island. Time appears to have stopped entirely on this island without cars.
As you meander through the maze of walkways carved through the palms, you can see the locals’ mud cottages and the various crafts and trades they practice. The Flying Fox, the world’s largest bat, has a large protected area.
Kilindoni Market
Kilindoni, the capital of the Mafia Islands, is a charming little town. It houses the single runway of the airport as well as the jetty from which fishermen and boats arrive and depart.
In the evening, women set up tables and chairs in the streets for customers to try local cuisine at incredibly low prices.
BBQ Lunch on Marimbani Sandbank
Mafia Island is only a short boat ride away from Marimbani, a pristine sandbank that only appears for a few hours each day. Crabs abound, as do white dunes and clear waterways.
It was worthwhile to arrive early or stay late to have the entire house to yourself. This is one of Mafia Island’s most popular activities.
Visit the Mafia Island Lighthouse
On the island’s northernmost point, an intact lighthouse can be seen. The vast majority of visitors do not visit this part of the island.
To get there, you can take a cab, tuk-tuk, or motorcycle. There is an undeveloped beach north of the island where you can swim.
