Volcanoes National Park

Overview

More than 15,000 feet above ground Northwest of Rwanda is a magnificent mountain range, the virunga Massif. Karisimbi is the highest standing at around 4,507m, Bisoke has a beautiful crater lake on it, the others are Sabinyo, Gahinga, and Muhabura.

Volcanoes National park a sanctuary for endangered Mountain Gorillas are found on the slopes of this mountain range.

The park was founded in 1925 to protect the mountain gorillas and other wildlife in it from poachers. Initially, the park spread into Congo and was Known as King Albert National Park. It was later in the 60s branded the volcanoes NP and separated from the Congo circuit. The park borders Virunga National Park in D.R.C and Mgahinga NP in Uganda.

Volcanoes NP embraces a classic rich mosaic of mountain ecosystems with evergreen rainforest and Bamboo vegetation, this is very pleasing to those who take their time to visit this amazing piece of paradise. The forest is dense with walkways created by the animal traveling through the park.

Gorilla tracking is the major activity in Volcanoes NP, in a group of at most 8 persons, you’ll hike inside the rainforest, serenaded with songs of over 200 bird species that also call this National Park home. Once you’ve located the mountain Gorillas you get a maximum of one hour to sit in their presence observing their life-like mannerism which is bound to leave a mark on you in one way or the other. The park offers other activities such as exploring Musanze cave which is said to be millions of years, hiking, and visiting the village communities nearby some of the cultural excursions taken in this area
